No warmth directly under knee area?

I really shouldn't be reviewing this after reading mfg. instructions. The Mfg. instructions say these should fit pretty snug. I ordered XL thinking I needed to wear a pair of pants under them. WRONG. I thin base layer is all that is suggested. I should have ordered Large. I'm 5' 11" and about 203# (athletic build). My waist is about a 34" and inseam about 34". These fit fine but should be a little tighter to my skin/base-layer. Concerned if I'd of ordered Large, would the inseam be too short however???? I tried to return these using Amazon but it said these were "Hazardous Material" and I could not return them. Some things are best bought at a retailer I suppose.
